UL 325 and Safety
UL, formally known as Underwriters Laboratories, is an organization that provides product testing for safety and certification for just about anything from telephones to toasters
When I built my latest home, I wanted a large opening for my garage/shop. Although a builder by trade, I have never installed a garage door. When I called the local garage door company for an estimate, they all laughed at me saying “Dude, you need to frame that back in to a 16’ x 7’”. No one would install a commercial door on a residential building for safety concerns (UL 325). After surfing the internet, I saw the Horizontal Garage Door as a solution and I NEEDED it!
The Horizontal Garage Door system is not new. It is an established product offering in Europe, Asia, Australia and others; capturing an estimated 20% of the residential garage door industry market. In North America, the United States and Canada specifically, the Horizontal Garage Door system has never been offered for mass production due to the limitations and constraints dictated by Underwriters Laboratories (UL 325). My challenge wasn’t the HGD system, it was UL 325. After two years of research and development, strategic industry partnerships and considerable expense, Contour Closures Inc. was awarded the UL 325 Compliance Certification for the Horizontal Garage Door system. Following the award, I personally received notification of acceptance to the coveted UL 325 Standards Technical Panel as a voting member for the door, gate and window operators industries as the only representative for the HGD system.
To further advance our company’s level of industry protection, we have a utility patent through the United States Patent and Trademark Office and the Canadian Intellectual Patent Office broadly covering all aspects of the Horizontal Garage Door system.
Simply put, Contour Closures Inc. is the only company in North America that can manufacture a Horizontal Garage Door system that is UL 325 Certified and under patent protection with both the USPTO and CIPO. Our goal is to fulfill the NEEDS of others by capturing at least 20% of the US and Canadian residential garage door market
